Case Filed Against TV Journalist Arnab Goswami, Known for Calling Congress ‘Enemy of the Nation’

#News Bureau July7,2025

A legal case has been filed against television journalist Arnab Goswami, who has often stirred controversy for branding the Congress party as the “enemy of the nation.” The case raises fresh questions about media ethics, freedom of expression, and the increasing polarization of news coverage in India.

Goswami, known for his combative on-air style and sharp criticism of opposition parties, particularly the Congress, now finds himself at the center of legal scrutiny. The complaint reportedly cites inflammatory remarks and alleged defamation, suggesting that his televised statements go beyond journalism and venture into politically motivated targeting.

This development adds to the ongoing debate over the role of news anchors in shaping public perception and the thin line between editorial opinion and hate speech.

Congress Leader Pawan Khera Files Defamation Suit Against Arnab Goswami Over ‘Enemy of the Nation’ Remark

Congress leader Pawan Khera has filed a defamation case against Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, taking strong exception to a statement made during a live broadcast in which Goswami allegedly accused the Congress party of siding with the “enemy of the nation.” The remark was reportedly made during coverage of “Operation Sindoor,” at a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.

However, the court noted that Khera had filed the petition in his personal capacity, while the alleged defamatory statement was directed at a political party. On this basis, the court instructed Khera to amend his petition accordingly.

Khera’s legal counsel has confirmed that they will revise the petition and submit an updated memo, including appropriate parties to the case. The proceedings are likely to continue once the revised documents are submitted.

Arnab Goswami Yet to Receive Petition Copy, Court Awaits Amended Plea in Defamation Case

Appearing on behalf of Arnab Goswami, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani informed the court that his client had not yet been served a copy of the defamation petition filed by Congress leader Pawan Khera. Responding to this, Justice Purushendra Kumar Kaurav remarked, “We have not issued summons to you yet. Your arguments will be heard once the summons is issued.” The court further stated that the next date of hearing will be scheduled after Khera files an amended version of his petition.

Arnab Goswami’s History of Controversies

Arnab Goswami is no stranger to controversy. Known for his combative and loud style of television journalism, he has frequently attracted attention—and criticism—for his aggressive on-air persona and provocative remarks.

In 2020, he faced multiple cases filed by the Maharashtra government, including charges related to abetment of suicide and alleged illegal activities. Some of his broadcasts have also been accused of being biased and inflammatory. While critics argue that Goswami’s brand of journalism fuels polarization and undermines media ethics, his supporters see him as a fearless, unapologetically outspoken journalist who challenges the status quo.

The current defamation case could once again bring the editorial practices of Goswami and his channel under public and legal scrutiny. With the court awaiting Khera’s revised petition, the next hearing is expected to draw keen attention.
