Independent Journalism | About NewsHashtag

Welcome to NewsHashtag, Independent Journalism Inside NewsHashtag

NewsHashtag is a digital-first media platform built on the foundation of public interest journalism, democratic values, and independent thinking. In an age where speed often replaces accuracy and sensationalism drowns out substance, we exist to slow things down — to make sense of the chaos, not just echo it. Our purpose is to decode trending stories in real time, giving you not only what happened, but also why it matters.

We are not here to chase headlines. We are here to question them. From local developments in India to global shifts that affect everyone, NewsHashtag aims to help readers stay one step ahead — not just informed, but truly aware.

What We Do Differently

NewsHashtag, we believe that independent journalism is essential to a functioning democracy. As a nonprofit news platform, we operate free from corporate interests and political pressures — ensuring our work serves only the public good. In an age of overinformation, we stand for truth-based reportingethical journalism, and a free press that speaks truth to power. Our commitment is not to ad revenue, but to the readers who demand accountability and depth in media.

We are also committed to modern storytelling. Our stories often include data visualisations, interactive charts, audio clips, and explainer videos. We use technology not as a gimmick, but as a way to make information accessible and engaging for the digital reader. If an issue deserves your attention, we make sure it earns it — through credible, clear, and compelling content.

Why We Exist

In a world of misinformation, half-truths, and algorithm-driven narratives, independent journalism is more important than ever. NewsHashtag was created out of the belief that the media should serve people, not power. We do not chase virality. We do not depend on corporate advertising. And we certainly do not follow political agendas.

What we do believe in is public trust. We believe in building a media space where stories are not manipulated for views but told with responsibility. Our readers are not data points — they are partners in a shared mission to reclaim the purpose of journalism. We write to inform, to question, to challenge, and most importantly, to serve.

Reader-Powered and People-Owned

NewsHashtag is not just independent in spirit — it is independent by structure. We are a not-for-profit initiative operating under WADA, a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Incorporated on September 11, 1997, WADA serves as the legal and ethical backbone of this platform.

This means we have no owners in boardrooms, no investors expecting returns, and no advertisers dictating our content. Our only accountability is to the public. NewsHashtag belongs to its readers. The people who read us, share our work, send feedback, and support our growth are the true stakeholders in our journey.

A Humble Beginning

We start with limited resources, but an unlimited vision. We know that building trust takes time, effort, and consistency. In this early phase, we do not make grand promises. Instead, we make a simple request: read our work, share it if it resonates with you, question it if it doesn’t, and send us your thoughts. Journalism grows stronger with participation, and that is what we hope to inspire — a journalism of engagement, not just consumption. At NewsHashtag, we believe in the power of independent journalism and the role of the free press as a watchdog in society.

Meet the Founders

NewsHashtag is the result of a shared vision by two seasoned journalists, Prabha Gupta and Gyaneshwar Dayal. With decades of experience in newsrooms, reporting, and editorial leadership, they bring both credibility and clarity to the table. Their goal is not just to create a media venture, but to build a platform that resists the pressure of commercialisation and speaks truth to power.

For them, journalism is not a business model. It is a public service. And NewsHashtag is their effort to keep that spirit alive.
