Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, strongly criticized the United States for imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods, branding it as “bullying.” Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Thursday, he warned that staying silent in the face of such actions would only embolden the aggressor. Xu expressed firm solidarity with India on the issue and emphasized the urgent need for fairness and cooperation in global trade.

Xu remarked, “The U.S. has long enjoyed the benefits of free trade but is now using tariffs as a bargaining weapon. Imposing 50% duties on India and threatening to raise them further is nothing short of bullying. Silence and inaction will only encourage such behavior.” He called upon developing nations like India and China to unite against such unfair policies.

Highlighting the importance of bilateral ties, Xu added, “The friendship between India and China is not only vital for Asia but also for global stability and prosperity. Both countries are dual engines of economic growth. Together, we must safeguard the multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organization (WTO).”

Trade tensions between India and the United States have deepened after President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Indian goods, including an additional 25% duty linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. Alongside this, the U.S. has suspended ongoing trade negotiations with India, claiming that certain Indian trade policies are against American interests. In response, India has rejected the tariffs as unfair and anti-trade.

China Voices Support for India
Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, highlighted recent positive momentum in India-China relations during his address in New Delhi. Referring to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to India, Xu mentioned his meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, where both sides agreed to form two new groups—one for boundary settlement and another for border management and cooperation.

Xu stressed that after the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, both nations have taken steps to reduce tensions. “Instead of suspicion, we should build strategic trust. India and China are not rivals, but partners,” he said, reaffirming China’s commitment to providing greater access for Indian products in the Chinese market.

Global Unity Against Trade Bullying

The Ambassador also welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, calling it a milestone for strengthening bilateral ties. He urged India and China to stand together in promoting a fair, multipolar world order and to safeguard equity in global trade.

“India and China must not only defend their national interests but also champion fairness and equality in global commerce,” Xu concluded.
