MBBS Student Rape Durgapur: Mamata Banerjee Blames College, Faces Backlash

Durgapur, Oct 12 – The shocking MBBS student rape in Durgapur has ignited a political storm in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the role of a private medical college in ensuring student safety. However, her remarks drew immediate backlash from the Opposition, which accused her of evading responsibility.

According to police, the alleged rape took place just outside the medical college campus. Although an investigation is underway, the fallout has been swift — and deeply political.

After MBBS Student Rape in Durgapur, Mamata’s Remarks Spark Outrage

Speaking at a public event, Mamata Banerjee said, “These private medical colleges charge lakhs in fees. But where is the basic security for students?” Her comment suggested institutional failure, rather than a breakdown in law and order.

However, this didn’t sit well with opposition leaders.

BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar responded sharply. “Law and order is a government function. Shifting blame to the college is an admission of failure,” he said.

Similarly, CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty criticised the CM for “diverting attention instead of taking responsibility.” As a result, Banerjee now finds herself at the centre of a controversy over governance and accountability.

College Remains Silent, Police Probe Ongoing

Meanwhile, the private medical college in Durgapur has not released any official statement. Despite mounting pressure, the administration has remained silent.

Students on campus are reportedly shaken. Some said they avoid venturing out after dark, especially near the college gate where the incident took place. Although campus security is in place, the areas just outside remain poorly lit and barely monitored.

Police have confirmed that one suspect has been detained for questioning. Moreover, they are examining CCTV footage and taking witness statements from students and local residents. While the investigation continues, public anger is growing.

This isn’t the first time a student safety issue has sparked political outrage in Bengal. However, the involvement of a top-ranking medical college, combined with the government’s response, has elevated this case to national attention
