B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge from Andhra Pradesh, has been officially declared as the Vice Presidential candidate of the INDIA alliance on Tuesday, August 19, after a series of high-level meetings. Reddy, who currently practices law, brings judicial experience and regional representation to the opposition bloc’s strategy. His nomination is being viewed as a significant political step as INDIA positions itself against the BJP in the upcoming Vice Presidential election.

The INDIA alliance on Tuesday officially announced former Supreme Court judge B. Sudarshan Reddy as its Vice Presidential candidate for the upcoming election. The decision was finalized after a key meeting of opposition parties at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. Reddy will face NDA’s candidate and current Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan in the Vice Presidential election scheduled for September 9.

In a joint press conference, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted Reddy’s distinguished career, saying, “B. Sudarshan Reddy is among India’s most respected and progressive judges. His long legal journey includes serving as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and a Supreme Court judge. He has consistently been a strong advocate for social, economic, and political justice.”

Who is B. Sudarshan Reddy?

Born on July 8, 1946, in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district, Reddy graduated in law from Osmania University in 1971 and registered with the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council the same year. He practiced in writ and civil matters at the Andhra Pradesh High Court and also served as Government Pleader from 1988 to 1990. In 1990, he worked as Additional Standing Counsel for the Union Government for six months. Apart from this, he also served as legal advisor and standing counsel for Osmania University.

With his deep legal expertise and reputation as a reform-minded judge, B. Sudarshan Reddy’s nomination is being seen as a major step in INDIA bloc’s strategy to challenge the ruling NDA in the Vice Presidential election 2025.

However, the NDA holds the support of at least 422 members out of 781 MPs, making Radha Krishnan’s victory in the Vice Presidential election almost certain. Yet, the opposition is treating this contest as an opportunity to deliver a strong ideological message. There could also be significant mobilization among MPs from South India, a region where the BJP has comparatively fewer representatives.
