What is the problem if we unite as Indians?

Ram Puniyan i October 25,2024

Last October 12 was the festival of Vijayadashami (Dussehra). This day is celebrated as the foundation day of RSS. It is a tradition that the RSS chief (Sarsanghchalak) gives an address on this day. As per tradition, Dr. Mohan Bhagwat delivered the speech. This speech came a few days after his important speech which he gave after the BJP’s disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections. In that speech, he had targeted Narendra Modi. During the election campaign, Modi had claimed that he is ‘non-biological’ and he feels that he has been sent to earth by God. In the backdrop of BJP’s seats falling from 303 to 240 in the election, Bhagwat said “A man first wants to become a superman, then a god, and then God.” Perhaps this was the first election in which BJP claimed that earlier it used to seek help from RSS because its own strength was less. But now it has become more powerful than before.

In this speech, Bhagwat attacked Modi’s growing arrogance and thereafter the Sangh Parivar threw its full weight behind the Haryana elections. The BJP won the election through manipulations allegedly done with the help of the Election Commission, despite the general perception that the Congress was sure to win the state.

In his Dussehra speech, Bhagwat reiterated most of the policies of the BJP, criticised the governments of non-BJP ruled states and discussed the core elements of Hindutva politics, outlining the real goals of the RSS. Mohan Bhagwat said,

“‘deep stet’, ‘vokijm’, ‘kalcharal maarksist’ shabd is samay charcha mein hain aur ye sabhee saanskrtik paramparaon ke ghoshit dushman hain. samaaj (ka) man banaane vaale tantr va sansthaon – udaaharan ke lie shiksha tantr va shiksha sansthaan, sanvaad maadhyam, bauddhik sanvaad aadi – ko apane prabhaav mein laana, unake dvaara samaaj ke vichaar, sanskaar, aastha aadi ko nasht karana, yah is kaaryapranaalee ka pratham charan hota hai. ek saath rahane vaale samaaj mein kisee ghatak ko usakee koee vaastavik ya krtrim reeti se utpann kee gaee…. samasya ke aadhaar par alagaav ke lie prerit kiya jaata hai. asantosh ko hava dekar us ghatak ko shesh samaaj se alag, vyavastha ke viruddh ugr banaaya jaata hai… vyavastha, shaasan, prashaasan aadi ke prati ashraddha va dvesh ko ugr bana kar araajakata va bhay ka vaataavaran khada kiya jaata hai. isase (unake lie) us desh par apana varchasv sthaapit karana saral ho jaata hai.”

“The words ‘deep state’, ‘wokeism’, ‘cultural Marxist’ are in the news these days and all of them are declared enemies of cultural traditions. Bringing the systems and institutions that shape the mind of the society – for example, the education system and educational institutions, media, intellectual discourse, etc. – under their influence and destroying the thoughts, values, faith, etc. of the society through them, is the first step of this methodology. In a society living together, a component is motivated to separate on the basis of some real or artificially created problem. By fanning discontent, that component is separated from the rest of the society and made aggressive against the system… An atmosphere of anarchy and fear is created by intensifying distrust and hatred towards the system, governance, administration, etc. This makes it easy (for them) to establish their dominance over that country.”

A relatively less common term, ‘wokeism’ is used mostly by the right wing to “insult people who are sensitive towards social and political injustices”. This was the central theme of Bhagwat’s speech. The Hindu right wing currently dominates the socio-political landscape of the country and the Sangh Parivar has created an environment of support for caste and gender discrimination in the society through its vast network of shakhas, schools like Saraswati Shishu Mandirs and Ekal Vidyalayas and discussions and dialogues in the society.

In recent years, the media controlled by big business houses sympathetic to the Sangh Parivar and the BJP’s IT cell have turned the attitude of a large section of the society in favour of Hindu nationalism.

The relationship between the RSS and the BJP is an internal matter of the Sangh Parivar, but the core values of both are the same. This is despite the fact that there is a clash of egos between the two. On other issues, the BJP is following the same path that Bhagwat reiterated in his speech. He criticised the governments of non-BJP ruled states. “Due to this, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh on the north-western border of the country; Kerala, Tamil Nadu on the maritime border; and the entire Purvanchal from Bihar to Manipur are unhealthy today,” he said. When he puts Ladakh and Manipur in the same category, he is exposed.

There has been terrible violence against the Kuki community in Manipur, especially its women. The indifferent and callous attitude of the BJP government in this regard is indeed worrying. As far as Ladakh is concerned, we have seen that there are movements on issues like environmental protection and demand for equal citizenship rights, and these are issues on which the movement is welcome and laudable. The movement in Ladakh has been completely peaceful. Sonam Wangchuk’s extraordinary leadership of this movement will be written in golden letters in history. The way BJP, the offspring of RSS, ignored the Ladakh movement is a black page in contemporary Indian history.

The RSS chief has displayed a partisan attitude by referring to the tragedy at R.G. Kar Medical College and by keeping silent on the cases of atrocities on women wrestlers and Dalit girls. The same gentleman had once claimed that rapes happen in India (urban areas) and not in ‘Bharat’. The truth is that most of these incidents in BJP-ruled states have taken place in rural areas or small towns. According to a report released by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, “The situation is alarming in terms of atrocities on Dalits… Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest number of such cases at 12,287, followed by Rajasthan with 8,651 cases and Madhya Pradesh with 7,732 cases”.

The funniest part of his speech was when he called upon Hindus to unite and be strong because the weak cannot defend themselves. Are we not united as Indians? What is wrong if we unite as Indians according to the Constitution? But it would not be logical to expect anything more from Bhagwat because even his faith in the Indian Constitution is nothing but a drama being staged by the Sangh Parivar for electoral gains.
