CWC meeting in Gujarat signals a big change in Congress; will it get a new lease of life?

#News Bureau April 8,2025

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Ahmedabad on Tuesday tried to decide the future direction of the party. In this meeting, priority was given to strengthening the organization and adopting an aggressive stance against the BJP. Many important decisions were taken in this meeting led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, whose aim was to bring new energy to the party and learn from the recent electoral defeat. But the question is, will this meeting really be able to breathe new life into the Congress?

The Congress organized this meeting at the historic Sardar Patel Bhavan in Gujarat, which holds symbolic importance for the party. This meeting took place before the session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which aims to infuse new life into the organizational structure and establish 2025 as a focused year for the organization. After the recent electoral defeat in states like Haryana and Maharashtra, the process of introspection within the party has intensified. Apart from this, under the leadership of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, the Congress is trying to present a strong alternative against the BJP.

The CWC prepared a roadmap to strengthen the organization at the grassroots level. In this, emphasis was laid on increasing activism at the booth and district level, empowering the workers and making the leadership accountable. Kharge said that the party will have to overcome its weaknesses and make 2025 the year of organization creation. For this, the ‘Nyayapath’ proposal was presented, which focuses on social justice and economic reforms. Along with this, a nationwide movement was planned against the BJP, in which issues like Manipur violence, Adani scam and attack on constitutional institutions will be raised.

The goal of this meeting was broadly two. First, improvement in the organization. After the defeat in states like Haryana and Maharashtra, the Congress admitted that victory is difficult without a strong grassroots organization. For this, there is a plan to make the district units powerful and reach the booth level. Second, an aggressive stance against the BJP. Rahul Gandhi said that the BJP is attacking the Constitution and democracy, and the Congress will have to answer it from the streets to the Parliament. It was also decided in the meeting that the party will fight a moral and political battle against the BJP while carrying forward the legacy of Gandhi and Patel.

Congress made sharp attacks on BJP. Kharge alleged that BJP is weakening constitutional institutions and spreading religious frenzy. Rahul Gandhi termed BJP as anti-constitutional and said that it is trying to destroy Gandhi’s legacy. A strategy was made to surround BJP by raising issues like unrest in Manipur, corruption charges on Adani Group and ‘Places of Worship Act’. Congress believes that it can harm BJP’s image among the public through these issues.

Organizing a meeting in Gujarat and mentioning the legacy of Gandhi-Patel symbolically gives a strong message. But the challenges are also not less. Lack of unity within the party, questions on leadership and weakness of implementation at the ground level have been seen before. Some workers showed enthusiasm on social media, but many asked whether these decisions will be able to come out of paper?

This meeting can prove to be a turning point for the Congress. This initiative towards strengthening the organization can help the party to present a strong challenge against the BJP. However, the challenges are not less. After the defeat in Haryana and Maharashtra, questions have been raised on leadership and strategy within the party. Some leaders have advocated collective decision-making instead of putting the entire responsibility on one person.

This meeting of the CWC is an attempt at a new beginning for the Congress. The decision to strengthen the organization and show aggression against the BJP is in the right direction, but success will depend on how effectively these plans are implemented. If the Congress is able to take it to the grassroots level, it can breathe new life into it. But if it remains limited to talks only, then the party’s challenges can deepen.
