On one hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was being opposed in London, on the other hand, she was welcoming her opponents. She was promising them sweets.
The matter is of Oxford University. As soon as Mamata Banerjee reached London’s Kellogg College to speak on the issue of women empowerment in Bengal, a ruckus started. Left wing student organizations started protesting against her heavily. Students associated with the UK chapter of Students Federation of India (SFI), the student organization of Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Oxford University, started protesting as soon as Mamata Banerjee arrived. The protesters had many issues, such as the rape in R.G. Kar Medical College, violence in West Bengal and alleged irregularities in the Panchayat elections. Apart from this, the students also wanted to question her on the issue of rape of a minor girl in 2023.
They were continuously protesting. They were preventing Mamata Banerjee from speaking. Mamata Banerjee, who is usually known to be tough towards her opponents, adopted a very soft approach there. Even when the students questioned her on the alleged rape case in R.G. Kar Medical College, she welcomed the questioners and said, “You raise your voice, this is democracy. I will listen.”
Mamata Banerjee also told that the investigation of the case on which questions are being raised is now in the hands of the central government and the state government has no role in it. She said, “This case is now under investigation by the central government, we have no control over it.”
She invited the protesting students to come to Bengal and do politics. She said, “Please do not do politics here. If you want to do politics, then come to Bengal and compete with me there.”
Mamata Banerjee addressed the male students of Oxford University as brothers. She requested them to fight against communal forces. Obviously, by communal forces, Mamata Banerjee was referring to the BJP. She told the students, “We love all of you. Don’t make this a political platform. If you want to do politics, come to Bengal and strengthen your party, fight communal forces. Don’t fight with me.”
While targeting the BJP, Mamata Banerjee also targeted the leftist parties. She accused the leftist parties that wherever they go, these parties try to spread anarchy. On this, she warned the protesters of the leftist faction that a similar atmosphere can be created when your leaders come here.
Amidst the protest of leftist student organizations, Mamata Banerjee shared the memory of an incident of 1990. In 1990, she was attacked by CPM supporters at Hazra Crossing in Kolkata. She also showed a black and white photo of herself after the 1990 attack after the protest in Oxford.
While speaking at Oxford University, Mamata Banerjee reiterated the principle of Sarvadharma Samabhava. During her speech, Mamata Banerjee also made it clear that she believes in the unity of all religions. She said, ‘I believe in all religions. I am for Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, everyone.’
She also accused the protesting students group of being against unity. She said, I talk about unity but you people do not.
Targeting the BJP government at the center from London, Mamata Banerjee said that ‘I want to see unity before I die. Unity is our strength and division leads to our downfall. This was the belief of Swami Vivekananda. Maintaining unity is a difficult task but it takes just a moment to divide people. Do you think the world can sustain such a divisive ideology?’
However, before this, the BJP had made sharp comments on her. Sharing a small clip of one of her videos, BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya wrote that “West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has a problem with India becoming the world’s largest economy… This is really shameful. It is a disgrace for her constitutional post. Who can behave like this on foreign soil?”
At the same time, on the latest incident, Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress called her a Bengal Tiger. Trinamool Congress shared a video on its official social media handle and wrote, “She does not back down, nor does she panic. The more you try to stop her, the louder she roars. Smt Mamata Banerjee is a Royal Bengal Tiger.”
