Withdrawal of troops from Depsang, Demchok completed: Report

##News Bureau October30,2024

According to a report, India and China have completed the process of withdrawing troops in Depsang and Demchok, the border areas of Ladakh. Now patrolling will start soon. The Indian government announced on October 21 that both sides have agreed on patrolling arrangements on the India-China border. Later it was also confirmed by China.

Media reports quoted sources as saying that the two countries have completed the task of withdrawing their troops after several rounds of talks in the border areas with China. According to the report, sources have said that talks will continue at the level of local commanders and sweets will be exchanged on Thursday.

The Indian Express reported quoting army sources that verification of disengagement is ongoing and patrolling modalities are to be decided between ground commanders.

Aerial and ground inspections are also being conducted to verify the complete dismantling of temporary installations and withdrawal of troops by both sides. As the withdrawal of troops has been confirmed in many areas, local level interactions are expected to continue on a regular basis to maintain and manage the agreed patrolling protocols.

Local military commanders of India and China met at Depsang and Demchok on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on October 30 to finalise the ongoing disengagement efforts.

Bad weather conditions in Demchok had put the brakes on a similar verification effort, but officials are hopeful that the process will be completed. By Tuesday evening, significant progress was seen in the area, with tents, temporary structures and vehicles completely removed from both Depsang and Demchok. The simultaneous disengagement and verification processes were carefully carried out. This is a significant step towards restoring peace and stability on the LAC.

India had announced on October 21 that it had signed an agreement with China to patrol the LAC. This announcement was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. This development took place when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Russia for the 16th BRICS summit on October 22-23. Misri had said that they are moving towards withdrawing from this and resolving the issues that arose in these areas in 2020.

The issues of 2020 that the Foreign Secretary mentioned are related to Galwan in eastern Ladakh. On 5 May 2020, Chinese soldiers intruded into the Indian border. This resulted in a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers on June 15. 20 Indian soldiers were martyred. There were also reports of many Chinese soldiers being killed
