Claim of finding burnt notes outside Justice Verma’s house again, why are questions being raised
#News Bureau March 23,2025
In this case, Delhi Police Commissioner sent a video to Chief Justice of Delhi High Court DK Upadhyay. In which allegedly burnt notes were shown and it was said that these burnt notes were found from Justice Yashwant Verma’s house. Chief Justice of Delhi High Court sent all the information to the Chief Justice of India and advised for a thorough investigation. Chief Justice of Supreme Court immediately formed a three-member committee to investigate this. Supreme Court also released the video in which this scene is shown. However, Justice Verma has denied all the allegations. He says that those burnt notes are not his. The place from where they have been recovered is not in his use.
The entire sequence of events in this case is out but many questions are also being raised. The most basic question in this case is how much cash was actually found. Half-burnt currency notes were visible in the video made immediately after the fire, but no official information has been made public about the total amount found so far. The lack of clarity on this point raises concerns.
According to reports, the half-burnt currency notes were removed from the store room on the morning of March 15. However, it is not clear who is in possession of the recovered cash. The Delhi Police has said that they do not have the cash, and Justice Verma has also denied having any knowledge of its location. If neither the officers nor the judge have the cash, where did it go?
The Delhi Police Commissioner has confirmed that a security guard informed him about the removal of debris and half-burnt items on the morning of March 15. However, it is not clear who removed the burnt currency, nor has anyone taken responsibility for safekeeping or documenting it. Was it destroyed, misplaced, or was it deliberately removed to destroy evidence?
Justice Verma says the store room was “accessible to everyone”. However, according to the preliminary report of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, only the resident, domestic staff and CPWD personnel had access to it. This contradiction raises further doubts about who might have placed or removed the cash. If the room was always open and easily accessible, how did such a huge amount remain unnoticed until the fire?
Justice Verma has categorically stated that the cash recovery case is a “conspiracy to trap and defame” him. However, he has not revealed who might have hatched this conspiracy. Since his judicial work has been suspended due to these allegations and a high-level investigation has been initiated, the motive and possible culprits of this conspiracy are still unclear.
On March 20, CJI of India Sanjiv Khanna proposed the transfer of Justice Verma to the Allahabad High Court after the news of the fire and the recovery of cash. However, on March 21, an official statement from the Supreme Court said that his transfer is not related to the ongoing investigation. If that is the case, then what is the specific reason for his transfer, why was the transfer done only after the fire incident.
