India has slipped further in the list of corrupt countries, know how much it has fallen in the last 10 years?

Transparency International has released the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2024. That is, the list tells which country stands where in the world’s corrupt countries or corruption. Out of 180 countries in the world, India is ranked 96th, while its total corruption level score has dropped to 38. However, it was 39 in 2023 and 40 in 2022. This score shows that corruption has increased continuously in every sector in India and its condition is getting worse. According to the report, since 2012, 32 countries have brought about a significant reduction in their corruption level. But during the same period, corruption has remained stable or its condition is getting worse in 148 countries. Denmark tops the list of least corrupt nations, followed by Finland and Singapore.
Among India’s neighbours, Pakistan (135) and Sri Lanka (121) are struggling with their own low rankings, while Bangladesh is even lower at 149. China is ranked 76th.
The average level of corruption worldwide has remained stagnant for 43 years, with more than two-thirds of these countries scoring below 50. Billions of people live in countries where corruption is destroying lives and undermining human rights.
India’s past record
India’s decline in corruption is astonishing if we look at it since 2015. The BJP government came to power at the Centre in 2014. Prime Minister Modi had given the slogan – Na khaunga na khane doonga. That is, Modi came to power with the slogan of ending corruption. But his slogan remained a jumla (slogan) and did not turn into reality. At least the past record shows this. In 2015, India was ranked 76th in terms of corruption, 79th in 2016, 81st in 2017, 78th in 2018, 80th in 2019, 86th in 2020, 85th in 2021, 85th in 2022 and 93rd in 2023. If you look at the figures carefully, you will find that Modi returned to power in 2019 and after that corruption is increasing every year.
The report says, “A large number of people around the world are facing the serious consequences of rising temperatures. Because the funds given to various countries to reduce greenhouse gas production are wasted in the Ganga of corruption. Such funds are misused extensively. Due to this corruption, the policies made to deal with the climate change crisis are hindered and the environment is harmed.” The report says that many countries with good CPI scores have the resources and power to advance anti-corruption climate action worldwide, but instead, they often serve the interests of fuel companies.
“Some countries are flooded with illicit money generated from corruption, environmental destruction and other crimes. Although the CPI does not measure it, dirty money is a major problem in corruption and its dangerous impact reaches far beyond these countries’ borders,” the report says.
According to the report, corruption is an emerging global threat that, more than undermining development, undermines democracy, creates instability and violates human rights. The report recommends that the international community and every country should give top priority to combating corruption.
