“Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a crucial cabinet meeting led to five major actions being taken against Pakistan. Here’s a look at the key decisions made.”

After the Pahalgam terror attack, a big decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting led by PM Modi. India has taken a historic and tough decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 with Pakistan with immediate effect. Along with this, India has ordered all Pakistani citizens to leave the country within 48 hours and announced the closure of the Pakistani Embassy.

These big decisions were taken

The Indus Water Treaty of 1960 has been suspended with immediate effect.

The Attari-Wagah crossing has been closed with immediate effect.

Any Pakistani citizen present in India will have to leave India within 48 hours.

The defense-military, naval and air advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata.

The total staff strength of the High Commissions will be reduced from the current 55 to 30.

This decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Security Committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The decision was taken after the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam in which 26 people have been killed.

This decision of India signals the beginning of a new and tense phase in India-Pakistan relations.

Indus Water Treaty suspension

The Indus Water Treaty was signed in 1960 by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan under the mediation of the World Bank. It is the basis for sharing the waters of six rivers – Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej between India and Pakistan. This agreement has been the only symbol of cooperation between the two countries for decades, which was maintained despite wars and tensions.

India’s decision to suspend the agreement is historic in many ways. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, ‘The agreement will remain suspended until Pakistan completely stops supporting cross-border terrorism.’ This step is part of the strategy to put economic and strategic pressure on Pakistan, because the Indus river is the basis of 80% of Pakistan’s irrigated agriculture and more than 50% of electricity production.

PM Modi observed two minutes of silence at Pahalgam in Bihar rally, said – will eliminate every terrorist

Expulsion of Pakistani citizens and border closure

India ordered all Pakistani citizens to leave the country within 48 hours. Along with this, diplomatic and embassy personnel were also suspended.

What will be the impact of the decision?

This step by India is not just a reaction, but is part of a long-term strategy. The Pahalgam attack once again exposed Pakistan’s support for terrorism. Investigations revealed that four to five terrorists involved in the attack were Pakistanis and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s mastermind Saifullah Khalid is hiding in Pakistan. This is why decisions with far-reaching effects on Pakistan were taken.

Suspending the Indus Water Treaty will have a profound impact on Pakistan’s agriculture and power generation. Pakistan is already dependent on a $7 billion IMF bailout and the water crisis can further weaken its economy.

It is believed that this decision of India will also become a topic of discussion on the global stage. The US has condemned Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard also criticized Pakistan’s ‘Islamist terrorism’. India can use this step to isolate Pakistan internationally.

Indus Water Treaty put on hold, Attari border closed, Pakistani citizens should leave the country within 48 hours: India
The decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and expel Pakistani citizens is a symbol of India’s zero tolerance policy against terrorism. This step will put economic and strategic pressure on Pakistan, but India will also have to face the challenges of increasing its water management capacity and dealing with regional tensions. This step will take India-Pakistan relations to a new era, where the path to peace will pass through the elimination of terrorism.

The Pahalgam attack has united India and this decision is a symbol of that unity and determination. But the question is, will this step be able to root out terrorism, or will it increase regional instability?
