Kharge Alleges: PM Modi Had Prior Knowledge of Pahalgam Attack Three Days Beforehand
#News Bureau May 6,2025
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has made a startling allegation, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advance knowledge of the Pahalgam terror attack. Is this a serious security lapse or merely political posturing? Here’s a detailed look at the full story.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has leveled a serious allegation against Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking at the ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ rally in Ranchi on Tuesday, Kharge claimed that PM Modi had prior information—three days in advance—about the impending attack but failed to alert security agencies. He alleged that intelligence agencies had warned the Prime Minister on April 19 about a possible terror strike, leading Modi to cancel his planned visit to Srinagar. However, Kharge accused the government of not passing this critical information to the police, security forces, or the Border Security Force. The BJP hit back strongly, branding Kharge as a ‘modern Mir Jafar’ and demanding an apology for what they called an irresponsible statement.
On April 22, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. 26 people died in this attack. The responsibility of the attack was taken by ‘The Resistance Front’, a branch of banned Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba.
BJP’s counterattack: ‘Kharge is like Mir Jafar’
BJP reacted sharply to Kharge’s claims. BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan called Kharge’s statement ‘anti-national’ and like a ‘modern Mir Jafar’. He said, ‘This toxic, baseless and insulting statement of Kharge against the PM is condemnable. If he has any proof then present it, otherwise apologize unconditionally.’
Kesavan also alleged that this statement of Congress strengthens Pakistan’s narrative. He said, ‘When the whole country is united against Pakistan, then why is Congress promoting the same narrative that Pakistan wants?’
BJP national spokesperson RP Singh also taunted Congress by calling it ‘Lashkar-e-Pakistan Congress’ and said that such statements weaken the unity of the country.
Controversy happened earlier too
This is not the first time that there has been controversy over Congress’ statements regarding the Pahalgam attack. After the attack, Congress had shared a picture in a social media post taking a dig at PM Modi’s absence, in which the word ‘gayab’ was written along with kurta-pyjama and black shoes. This post was shared with the caption ‘gayab at the time of responsibility’. BJP had described it as a symbol of ‘sir tan se juda’ mentality. After heavy criticism, Congress removed this post and directed its leaders to follow the official line of the party.
After the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government took several strict steps against Pakistan. These include suspending the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, closing the Attari border crossing, cancelling visa services for Pakistani citizens and declaring military advisers of the Pakistani embassy as ‘persona non grata’.
Prime Minister Modi said in his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, “The perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack and their patrons will be given the strongest response. This cowardly act of terrorism cannot break India’s resolve.” He also said that the 140 crore people of India are united against terrorism.
Kharge said in his statement that the Congress stands with the government for the unity of the country, but the BJP termed his claims as ‘divisive’. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have demanded that a special session of Parliament be called to discuss the Pahalgam attack. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “This is the time for unity. We want the government to teach Pakistan a lesson, but the PM should come to Parliament and answer how this attack happened.”
Owaisi calls Pak a ‘failed nation’, demands action
The Pahalgam terror attack is not only raising questions on India’s security system but also giving rise to acrimonious rhetoric among political parties. Kharge’s claims and BJP’s counter-attack have further complicated the issue. At a time when tensions between India and Pakistan are at their peak, the need for national unity and collective resolve is the greatest.
