Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has demanded a relief and rehabilitation package for the families killed in the firing and people whose houses were destroyed in Poonch, Rajouri and other areas during the Indo-Pak conflict. The central government has come under pressure due to this demand of Rahul.
The recent Pakistani shelling in Poonch and other border areas of Jammu and Kashmir has caused massive destruction, claiming several lives and destroying hundreds of homes, schools, and religious places. Following the tragedy, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited the affected areas and met the affected families and described their suffering as a “big tragedy”. Rahul Gandhi has now written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an immediate and generous relief and rehabilitation package for Poonch and other affected areas. He also shared it on Twitter on Thursday.
Rahul Gandhi wrote in his letter, “The people of Poonch and other border areas have been living in peace and brotherhood for decades. Today when they are going through this deep crisis, it is our duty to understand their pain and provide all possible assistance to rebuild their lives.” He urged the government to immediately announce a concrete relief and rehabilitation package for the affected areas.
This move of Rahul has increased pressure on the Modi government at the Center. The opposition has expressed displeasure over the fact that neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Home Minister Amit Shah have yet visited Poonch or other affected areas to meet the victims. The Congress has termed this as the government’s insensitivity and has put the BJP in the dock.
On the other hand, the central government and the BJP are calling Operation Sindoor their big success. The government claims that through this operation, India has achieved a decisive victory over Pakistan by destroying terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). However, US President Donald Trump and the US government have claimed that the ceasefire in the India-Pakistan conflict happened due to their mediation.

Gandhi visited Poonch on Saturday (May 25) and met the victims of Pakistani shelling after the Pahalgam attack on April 22 and subsequent Indian retaliation in PoK and Pakistan. Sharing a video of his visit, Gandhi said on X, “The pain of Poonch can only be felt by going there. Broken homes, shattered lives — even through the echo of this pain, there is only one voice — we Indians are one. I am not requesting, but reminding the government of its responsibility — a concrete, generous and immediate relief and rehabilitation package must be prepared for Poonch and other areas affected by Pakistani shelling. This is not help, this is duty.”

Pakistani Shelling Causes Widespread Destruction in J&K; Rahul Gandhi Demands Immediate Relief
Recent shelling by Pakistan in Poonch and other border regions of Jammu and Kashmir has led to widespread devastation, resulting in numerous casualties and the destruction of hundreds of homes, schools, and places of worship. In the aftermath, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited the affected areas, meeting with families impacted by the violence and describing their suffering as a “big tragedy.”
Following his visit, Gandhi penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to announce an immediate and substantial relief and rehabilitation package for the affected areas. He also shared the letter publicly on Twitter on Thursday.
In his letter, Gandhi wrote:
“The people of Poonch and nearby border regions have lived in peace and harmony for decades. In this time of deep crisis, it is our moral responsibility to acknowledge their pain and provide every possible support to help them rebuild their lives.”
He called for swift and concrete government action to assist those affected.
Gandhi’s appeal has intensified pressure on the central government. The opposition has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for not visiting the affected areas, labeling their absence as a sign of governmental indifference. The Congress party has accused the BJP of being insensitive to the plight of the victims.
Meanwhile, the BJP and the central government have highlighted Operation Sindoor as a major success, claiming it dealt a decisive blow to terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). However, the U.S. government, including President Donald Trump, has stated that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was a result of American diplomatic intervention.
