At least 30 Palestinians were killed and more than 115 injured when Israeli forces opened fire near a US-funded aid distribution centre in southern Gaza. The incident took place in the early hours of the morning when thousands of Palestinians had gathered near the aid centre. A local Palestinian journalist told BBC News that Israeli tanks opened fire on the crowd. The bodies of the dead and injured were carried from the scene on donkey-carts, reflecting the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
The injured Palestinians were brought to Nasr Hospital near Rafah after the alleged attack this morning. Hamas responded to the incident by accusing Israeli forces operating in Rafah of carrying out a new massacre against hungry civilians who were allegedly gathering at ‘humanitarian aid’ distribution sites. Hamas described these sites as ‘mass death traps’, not humanitarian relief centres.
The deadly incident came just hours after Hamas responded to a fresh US-backed ceasefire proposal. Hamas stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire, which has long been a point of contention for Israel.
Mamata is doing politics of appeasement: Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of doing politics of appeasement and taking a wrong stand on national security issues. He particularly criticized Mamata for opposing Operation Sindoor and the Waqf Amendment Bill.
Amit Shah targeted Mamata Banerjee in his speech and said, ‘Mamata Banerjee has made West Bengal a center of infiltration, corruption, atrocities on women and mistreatment of Hindus. As soon as the TMC government goes, the killers of BJP workers hiding under the ground will be brought out and given severe punishment. Shah said, ‘Mamata Banerjee is also opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill for the politics of appeasement. What is wrong with the Waqf Act? Should illegal occupation of West Bengal land.
TMC’s response
Mamata Banerjee’s party, Trinamool Congress has strongly condemned Shah’s statements. TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh said, ‘Amit Shah has used abusive and low level language against the Chief Minister. This shows the frustration of the BJP, as they are not able to make their political ground in Bengal.’ TMC also alleged that the BJP is trying to divide the society on religious grounds and the people of Bengal will remain united under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.
