Delhi Election are around. During 2020 election Kejriwal said in an interview with Rajdeep Sardesai that by 2025 I will clean Yamuna if I fail to do so do not vote me in two 2025 election According to a data from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), an amount of Rs 6856.9 crore was sanctioned to various departments engaged in cleaning the Yamuna in the five years between 2017-18 to 2020-21.

The total length of Yamuna in Delhi is only 22 kilometers. This is about two percent of its total length of 1370 kilometers. But this two percent area produces 80 percent of Yamuna’s total dirt. For cleaning this two percent area, the Central and Delhi government has spent more than Rs 7000 crore in the last seven years, but the water of any part of Yamuna is not fit for drinking or bathing, let alone touching it. Health experts say that even putting hands in the dirty water of Yamuna is like inviting diseases. Along with Delhi, the biggest loss is being suffered by those people whose life depends on Yamuna.

What do the figures say

According to a data of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), an amount of Rs 6856.9 crore was sanctioned to various departments engaged in cleaning the Yamuna in the five years between 2017-18 to 2020-21. This amount was given for the purification of dirty water falling into Yamuna. From 2015 to the first half of 2023, the central government had given about Rs 1200 crore to the Delhi Jal Board for cleaning the Yamuna. In this, Rs 1000 crore was given under the National Mission for Clean Ganga and Rs 200 crore under Yamuna Action Plan-3.

Kejriwal government spent

Under the Namami Gange Yojana, the central government had sanctioned an amount of Rs 4290 crore. With this amount, work was to be done on 23 projects to treat and purify the dirty water falling into the Yamuna. Its total capacity was 1840 MLD. Out of these, 12 projects were in the capital Delhi, while one in Himachal Pradesh, two in Haryana and eight STPs were to be built at various places in Uttar Pradesh.

Why Yamuna is not getting cleaned

BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala told Amar Ujala that the central government has given financial assistance of thousands of crores of rupees to the Delhi government for cleaning the Yamuna, but the Arvind Kejriwal government has spent this money on its false propaganda. He alleged that due to the corrupt rule of the Aam Aadmi Party, the dirty water generated from Delhi is not being cleaned in the STP and the Yamuna and the people of Delhi are bearing the brunt of it.

‘Everyone should understand their responsibility’

River water rights activist Naveen Jain told Amar Ujala that three reasons for Yamuna not being clean are very clear. The biggest reason for the pollution of Yamuna is the lack of complete purification of the dirty water generated in Delhi by the central and state governments and dumping it in the Yamuna. If the dirty water generated in the Delhi capital region is purified by building an STP and dumped in the Yamuna, then it can be saved from getting dirty.

According to Naveen Jain, there are factories located at various places in Delhi. They also do the work of dyeing clothes. Chemicals are manufactured in many other factories, but dumping dangerous chemicals directly in Yamuna without purification and not having any suitable mechanism to stop this is the biggest reason for its pollution.

Lack of civic sense

The biggest reason for Yamuna’s pollution is the lack of sense of duty among the citizens. They do not consider it wrong to throw the waste of fruits and flowers in Yamuna after performing puja. Even educated people pollute Yamuna in the name of faith and they do not consider anything wrong in doing so. Due to this lack of thinking among the citizens, cleaning of Yamuna does not even become a priority for the governments. This is the reason why Yamuna never gets cleaned.
