There is a fierce rivalry between Israel and Iran in this region of the Middle East and Iran supports groups like Hezbollah against Israel and Western powers.
The situation in the region has been tense since the exchange of fire between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah started last year on October 8. This incident happened on the day when the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas attacked communities in southern Israel and gave rise to the Gaza war.
