A significant shift had occurred under the Modi government , marked by a notable increase in beef exports from India to developed nations. The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook revealed that beef exports have doubled during Modi’s tenure. In 2017, India exported 1.56 million tonnes of beef and is expected to remain the third-largest beef exporter, contributing 16 percent of global exports by 2026.

Surprisingly, India—a country where cows are predominantly considered sacred—might soon become the world’s leading beef exporter.

Currently, India ranks third in beef exports and is projected to maintain this position over the next decade, according to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have consistently opposed cow slaughter on religious grounds. In Hinduism, cows are regarded as sacred and maternal figures. Interestingly, during a recent visit, Prime Minister Modi gifted 200 cows to poor villagers in Rwanda, a nation where beef consumption is common.

Although the BJP claims that the majority of exported beef is buffalo meat, no survey specifies the type of beef being exported.
