Budget 2024: India Alliance’s massive protest outside Parliament, boycott in Rajya Sabha

#News Bureau July 24,2024

The opposition’s protest against the Union Budget 2024 is increasing. India Alliance MPs staged a sit-in in the Parliament premises on Wednesday, July 24. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that we are fighting against the anti-people budget. This budget is anti-people, no one got justice. They have talked about special package but did not give special state status. This is a deceptive budget and injustice has been done to the people.” The MPs held placards in their hands that read ‘We want India’s budget, not NDA’s’ and ‘NDA betrayed India in the budget’. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at the ruling government, saying that they could not take any concrete steps regarding inflation and instead of giving MSP to farmers, “support price was given to alliance partners who are saving their government.” Joining the India Alliance’s protest against the Union Budget, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that it is giving very little to most of the states in the country. “There is very little for most states. There were some hopes for Kerala, especially in the health sector, but they have not all been fulfilled. Every state has its own issues,” he said

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi said that despite Maharashtra being the highest tax paying state, it “did not get its share in return.” Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Majhi said that her state is also a backward state, but nothing special has been given to Jharkhand in the budget. There were a lot of expectations, a lot of money was also needed for the railways. In this budget, an attempt has been made to please the same people with whose support the government has been formed at the Center.

Calling it an unfair budget, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said the government is not bothered about what the local needs of the states are. “This is a desperate budget of a government desperate to save its own existence,” he said.
The Opposition in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday staged a walkout minutes after the session began, in protest against the “discriminatory” budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday. Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Kharge alleged that the budget was prepared only to “please a few people”.
