Is the work pressure in some areas so much that employees are being forced to commit suicide? The suicide of a finance manager in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh has raised a big question. In recent days, there have been many reports of deaths due to work pressure one after the other and the case of Jhansi is also one of them.

The case is of the suicide of 42-year-old Tarun Saxena. Tarun was found dead by the house servant this morning. He had locked his wife and two children in another room. His family includes parents, wife Megha and children – Yatharth and Pihu. Tarun Saxena has said in a note that for the last two months his senior officers were pressuring him to meet the target and threatening to cut his salary. According to NDTV report, Tarun was working as an area manager in Bajaj Finance. Bajaj Finance has not yet responded to the allegations.

The debate about death due to work pressure has intensified across the country when 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil died a few days ago. Earlier this month, a letter from Anna’s mother Anita Augustine caused massive outrage on social media. In a letter to Ernst & Young India chairman Rajiv Memani, he wrote that his daughter died just four months after joining the company and called on the company leadership to change a work culture that ‘glorifies excessive work while neglecting the human being’. He wrote that Anna used to work till late night.

Meanwhile, in the Jhansi case, in a five-page letter addressed to his wife, Tarun has written that he was under a lot of stress as he was unable to meet the target despite trying his best. Tarun was assigned the task of collecting EMIs of Bajaj Finance loans from his area, but due to several issues, he was unable to meet the target. He also said that he was worried that he would lose his job. He wrote that his senior officers repeatedly insulted him. He wrote, ‘I am very stressed about the future. I have lost the ability to think. I am leaving.’

Tarun has said that he and his colleagues had to pay the EMIs that they were unable to collect from their area. He wrote that he repeatedly raised the problems in recovery before his superiors, but they were not ready to listen to him. He wrote, ‘I have not slept for 45 days. I have hardly eaten anything. I am very stressed. Senior managers are pressuring me to meet the target at any cost or leave the job.’

According to the report, Tarun also wrote that he has paid his children’s school fees till the end of the year and he has apologized to his family members. He said, ‘All of you take care of Megha, Yatharth and Pihu. Mummy, Papa, I have never asked for anything, but now I am asking. Please get the second floor built so that my family can live comfortably.’ Addressing his children, he has said that they should study well and take care of their mother. He asked his relatives to ensure that his family gets the insurance amount.

He also named his senior officers and asked his family to file a police complaint against them. He has said, ‘They are responsible for my decision.’ According to NDTV report, Tarun’s cousin Gaurav Saxena said that he was being pressured to increase loan recovery. He said, ‘In a video conference at 6 am today, his seniors put mental pressure. He said that he cannot work and should be fired from the job. He has written their names in his suicide note.’ Senior police officer Vinod Kumar Gautam said that they have received the post-mortem note. He said, ‘It is mentioned in the suicide note that his seniors were pressurising him regarding targets. If we get a complaint from the family, we will take action.’
