Hash#ag News May 27,2024
Elections for 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held in the final phase on June 1. Elections will also be held on June 1 for one seat in the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab. In the previous episode you read the analysis of Majha Seat. Now know the situation of Doaba in this second episode.
Central Punjab is called Doaba which is the area between the western bank of Sutlej River and the eastern bank of Beas. There are two Lok Sabha seats here – Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Both these are reserved seats. These are also often called NRI seats. Because a large number of people from this area are settled in foreign countries.
This seat has become quite interesting with the arrival of former Congress Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi in the Jalandhar Scheduled Caste reserved seat of Doaba. Congress currently has 5 MLAs in the 9 assemblies falling under the Lok Sabha constituency. Sushil Kumar Rinku, the previously announced candidate of Aam Aadmi Party, left Aam Aadmi Party at the last moment and joined BJP. BJP has now made Sushil Kumar Rinku its candidate. Pawan Kumar Tinu is the candidate from Aam Aadmi Party, who is said to change parties as per the opportunity. Stayed in Bahujan Samaj Party for a long time and joined Akali Dal before the assembly elections in 2012.
Now joined Aam Aadmi Party from Akali Dal for Lok Sabha ticket. Shiromani Akali Dal has given ticket to Mohinder Singh, who was a Congress leader and joined the Akali Dal just before the elections. This area has been the birthplace of Dalit leader Jagjit Singh Choudhary and his brother Santokh Singh Choudhary, who died of heart attack during Bharat Jodo Yatra, but no one from that family is in the election this time. Now the challenge before the voters is to elect the Congress candidate or a better turncoat and send him to Parliament.
Hoshiarpur seat
Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha seat is a reserved seat. Darbara Singh, former Chief Minister of Punjab Giani Zail Singh and former President. Kanshi Ram, founder of Bahujan Samaj Party have been MPs from here. Once in 1967, Jan Sangh had also won from here. This seat has been in BJP’s account for the last two times. This time BJP has made its candidate from here Anita Somprakash, who is the wife of outgoing MP Somprakash. Of the 9 assembly seats, 5 are with Aam Aadmi Party, 2 with Congress, 1 with BJP and one seat is still vacant. Aam Aadmi Party has nominated Dr. Rajkumar Chabbewal, who recently joined the party from Congress, as its candidate.
