Haryana: Troubled by the anti-government wave, BJP will cancel the tickets of some ministers
#News Bureau August 2,2024
Troubled by the internal situation in Haryana, BJP is going to cut the tickets of many MLAs. Compared to the 2019 assembly elections, this time at least 25 percent new faces will be in the fray. Many ministers and current MLAs are likely to be axed. Two months are left for the state assembly elections. The dates may be announced in September.
To counter the anti-incumbency wave in Haryana, BJP is preparing a list of ‘winnable’ candidates. At present, the party is preparing ‘report cards’ of ministers, current MLAs and potential candidates to weigh the ‘winnability’ of ticket claimants in the state.
Sources said that some ministers and sitting MLAs will not get tickets again. The party is considering only the names of those who have the ability to win.
However, recently appointed state BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli has confirmed to the media that the party will replace about 25 per cent of the 90 candidates contesting the 2019 elections. Badoli said, “However, this does not mean that all 41 sitting MLAs will be dropped. The new faces falling in the 25 per cent category may also be among the unsuccessful candidates in the 2019 elections.” That is, the margin of their defeat will be seen.
The party is taking surveys, feedback from workers and leaders to find candidates for 90 assembly seats. Later, a panel of candidates for each assembly constituency will be submitted to the Central Election Committee to take a final decision on the selection of candidates. In the last election, due to the ego of many big leaders of the party, tickets of some people were cut. But this time it will not happen. For example, last time the BJP high command did not give tickets to many good faces on the behest of a minister in Faridabad. This time those people are being brought in the list of potential candidates.
However, sources said that most of the candidates removed will be from those 46 assembly constituencies where the party had to taste defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Most of these assembly constituencies fall in Ambala, Sonipat, Rohtak, Hisar and Sirsa parliamentary constituencies, where the opposition Congress won.
The BJP is mainly focusing on those 44 assembly seats where the party has maintained its lead over the Congress in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Sources said the next focus would be on constituencies where the margin of victory for the Congress was very narrow.
However, to assess the ‘winning ability’ of the ticket claimants, the party is preparing ‘report cards’ of ministers, current MLAs and potential candidates. For this, the report of the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) of the police is also being used. Actually, the image of the current BJP MLAs is bad due to various issues on many seats. But the party wants to reach a conclusion only after getting it confirmed by a government agency. Because due to factionalism in every district, one faction is also resorting to fake complaints against the other faction.
