Iran admits its nuclear installations have suffered extensive damage; assessment is ongoing

#News Bureau June25,2025

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the US attacks have caused extensive damage to its nuclear installations. However, earlier a US intelligence report had said that not much damage had been done. Know the full story:

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei has confirmed that the country’s nuclear facilities suffered “significant damage” due to last week’s U.S. airstrikes. Speaking to Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Baghaei declined to provide detailed information, but acknowledged that the attacks carried out on Sunday by U.S. B-2 bombers using bunker-busting bombs were indeed severe and caused the major damage. This claim had also been made by U.S. President Trump. However, when a U.S. intelligence report stated that the damage was not extensive, Trump came under criticism.

This is the first time Tehran has publicly acknowledged that its nuclear facilities were damaged by American strikes. The statement came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed an intelligence report which claimed that the key underground components of Iran’s nuclear program were not significantly affected by the attacks.

Baghaei stated, “Our nuclear infrastructure has suffered serious damage from the attack, but we will not share further details or specifics at this time. The assessment is still ongoing.” So far, Iran has not released any official statement regarding the full extent of the damage or the status of the affected facilities.

Iran Declares: Nuclear Program Will Continue

While the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson maintained his earlier statement, Iran’s Parliament on Wednesday passed a resolution affirming that the country’s nuclear program will continue. The Parliament also approved a proposal to sever ties with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to an Al Jazeera report, statements by the President and Foreign Minister made it clear that, despite recent events, Iran remains committed to advancing its nuclear program.

U.S. and Israeli strikes had targeted three of Iran’s nuclear sites, but it remains unclear whether they were completely destroyed. The Iranian Parliament has approved a bill to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. However, this bill will now be reviewed by the Guardian Council, which will examine it from both legal and religious perspectives. If consensus is reached there, the bill will proceed to the Supreme National Security Council and eventually to the government for final approval as national policy.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei confirmed that Parliament had voted to suspend cooperation with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA — but not to terminate it entirely. Baghaei explained that the bill lays out specific conditions for future engagement with the agency, including guarantees for the safety of Iranian scientists and nuclear facilities. He added that it also calls for respect for Iran’s rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Baghaei stated, “If we are to remain a responsible member of the NPT, then its terms must be applied equally to all nations. There cannot be one set of rules for some and another for others.”

Iran: Qatar Mediated the Ceasefire

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson revealed that Iran agreed to a ceasefire with Israel after being approached by Qatar, which was also contacted by the United States. Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said that while the Iranian people suffered “great losses” in the conflict, they stood firm in the face of attacks by the U.S. and Israel.

Baghaei stated, “Our people were massacred due to Israeli aggression. This is a war crime, a crime against humanity, and they (Israel) must be held accountable.” He added, “But the point is that our people demonstrated their determination to defend national security and sovereignty.”

Marco Rubio’s Claim

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with Politico on Wednesday that following last week’s American strikes on three major nuclear sites in Tehran, Iran is now “much farther from acquiring a nuclear weapon.” Rubio’s statement came in response to a CNN report citing intelligence assessments, which suggested that the U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities had only delayed Tehran’s nuclear program by a few months.

President Trump dismissed the CNN report as fake news, while a White House spokesperson also labeled the claim—that Iran had suffered little damage—as inaccurate.
