Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took oath along with 72 ministers of the new coalition government. Of these, there are 30 cabinet ministers, five independent charge and 36 ministers of state

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took oath along with 72 ministers of the new coalition government. Thirty of them are Cabinet ministers, five with independent charge and 36 ministers of state. The portfolios will be announced later.
The 73-year-old PM Modi will lead the coalition government in his third term or Modi 3.0 for the first time since becoming prime minister following the big “Brand Modi” victory in 2014 after 10 years of rule of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
He is the second prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to be elected for a third consecutive term.
The swearing-in ceremony is being held at the lawns of Rashtrapati Bhavan, with the weather office predicting a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius in the national capital.
President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to PM Modi. He was followed by Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah. Nitin Gadkari was the fourth leader to be administered the oath of office by the President. He was followed by JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar and Manohar Lal Khattar.
HD Kumaraswamy of Janata Dal (Secular), who took oath after Mr Khattar, was the first leader from any of the BJP’s allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to take oath. Soon after, Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh, a close aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also took oath.
Sarbananda Sonowal is the first leader from the Northeast to take oath today, Kiren Rijiju the second.
BJP’s prominent Scheduled Caste face and eight-time MP Virendra Kumar was inducted into the Narendra Modi government. He won the election from the Tikamgarh reserved seat in Madhya Pradesh.
Supporters of the leaders called on the stage clapped and cheered loudly when they saw their leaders walk towards the mike to be sworn in by the President.
Jyotiraditya Scindia’s induction into the Modi 3.0 council of ministers has strengthened his importance in the BJP, marking the beginning of his second term in the Union Cabinet since he quit the Congress four years ago.
Hardeep Singh Puri, a former diplomat who helped India overcome two successive oil crises, was among the ministers sworn in today.
Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan today consolidated his position as the “real” political heir of his father Ram Vilas Paswan after joining the Narendra Modi government. With this, Chirag Paswan has made a remarkable comeback in the turbulent political scene of Bihar.
The event was attended by leaders from India’s neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean region, including Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
