Modi, Jinping hold first talks in 5 years- ‘Peace on the border should be a priority’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first official bilateral meeting in five years on Wednesday. Both leaders have arrived in the Russian city of Kazan to attend the BRICS summit. They met on the sidelines of the BRICS group summit. Prime Minister Modi said that bringing peace on the border should be a priority, while Jinping said that it is in the interest of both countries and people that we maintain the right direction of our bilateral relations.

The two leaders met for an informal summit in Mahabalipuram in October 2019. There was a military standoff on the LAC after the Chinese intrusion in eastern Ladakh in 2020 and then there was tension between the two countries. They held separate meetings in Bali in 2022 and Johannesburg in 2023, but Wednesday’s meeting is the first fully official bilateral meeting.

In the meeting, PM Modi said, ‘We are meeting officially after 5 years. We believe that India-China relations are very important not only for our people but also for global peace, stability and progress. We welcome the consensus reached on the issues raised in the last 4 years on the border. Maintaining peace and stability on the border should be our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the basis of our relations.’

Jinping said, ‘Mr. Prime Minister, I am very happy to meet you in Kazan. This is the first time in the last five years that we are having a formal meeting. The people of both our countries and the international community are closely watching our meeting. Both China and India are ancient civilizations, major developing countries and important members of the Global South. Both of us are at a crucial stage in our respective modernization efforts. It is best for the fundamental interests of both our countries and the people here that both sides maintain the trend of history and the right direction of our bilateral relations.’

After this agreement, there has been a significant progress in the efforts to resolve the military deadlock on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. China has also confirmed that it has reached a solution and will work with India to effectively implement the plan.

This arrangement of patrolling on the LAC has been done nearly four and a half years after the clash in the Galwan Valley. This is a sign of reducing tension in the area, where both the countries have deployed thousands of soldiers. When Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was asked at a press conference in Kazan on Tuesday whether there has been an agreement between India and China to resume patrolling at the remaining conflict points on the LAC, Misri replied that the immediate focus would be on disengagement and then the issue of withdrawal of troops and reducing tension would be considered at the appropriate time.

Let us tell you that there was a dispute between the two countries four years ago in Galwan in eastern Ladakh. On May 5, 2020, Chinese soldiers intruded into the Indian border. The result was that later on June 15, there was a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers. 20 Indian soldiers were martyred. There were also reports of many Chinese soldiers being killed.

After that clash in 2020, several rounds of talks have been held between the two countries to resolve the issues. Each side currently has about 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers on the LAC. An uneasy stalemate remained between the Indian and Chinese armies along the 1597 km Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Now it is believed that the situation will gradually return to normal.
