More than a dozen cases against Rahul Gandhi, will the Modi government be able to stop the opposition leader?

In 2023, the country was told that 12 cases are registered against Rahul Gandhi. But now when 2024 is about to end, this number of cases has reached 26 against him. The most recent case was registered on December 19. In Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a comment on Ambedkar, which led to a controversy. The next day, MPs of the India Alliance protested on this issue. After that, when Rahul Gandhi wanted to go to the Parliament House, it is alleged that BJP MPs blocked his way by pushing him. Then went to the police station and got an FIR registered against Rahul. On the other hand, BJP MPs were accused of pushing Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to the ground and misbehaving with Congress women MPs. The Crime Branch of Delhi Police is now investigating both the cases.
Congress alleges that a series of cases were registered against Rahul Gandhi after he raised questions on Adani. In 2023, he was suspended from the Lok Sabha membership for this reason. But his Lok Sabha membership was restored on the intervention of the Supreme Court. Rahul Gandhi has been raising the issue of industrialist Gautam Adani for two years. But it gained momentum this year when two cases were filed in the US court against Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. In which he and 6 other people are accused of bribing Indian officials. They are accused of bribing government officials of more than 2000 crores to get solar power contracts in India.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his Modi surname remark. The court sentenced Gandhi to two years’ imprisonment but he was later granted bail. The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged “How come the common surname of all thieves is Modi?” remark. The case was filed on a complaint by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. Rahul Gandhi returned to the Lok Sabha four months after he was disqualified as an MP as a result of his conviction in the Modi surname defamation case
Amit Shah ‘accused of murder’: A case was filed against Gandhi on August 4, 2018 for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Shah at a press conference in Bengaluru during the Karnataka elections. Gandhi was granted bail on February 20, 2024.
Rafale-Modi comment: Rahul Gandhi made derogatory statements against Modi during a rally in Rajasthan. According to the complaint, Gandhi later posted on his personal X account, “The sad truth about the thief commander of India.” The complainant alleged that Gandhi was “making derogatory statements against Modi and calling him ‘Commander in Thief’ and directly accusing all BJP members and Indian citizens associated with Modi of theft.” The case was registered following the complaint.
Savarkar (Pune) case: Satyaki Savarkar, grandson of Vinayak Savarkar, filed a case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of making statements during his visit to the United Kingdom on March 5, 2024. The petitioner, who found a video of Gandhi’s speech in Pune on social media, said the allegations levelled against Savarkar were not in the public interest and were made with an intention to tarnish his image in society.
Sushil Modi-Patna case: BJP Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi has filed a case against Rahul for his controversial remarks made in Kolar, Karnataka during the 2019 general elections, where he was quoted as saying “Why do all thieves have the surname Modi?”
Ahmedabad District Cooperative (ADC) Bank case: A defamation case was filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and he was later granted bail after pleading not guilty. The criminal defamation case was filed by the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank, one of whose directors is Union Home Minister Amit Shah and its chairman Ajay Patel.
Savarkar (Thane) case: In another Savarkar case, a complaint was filed against Gandhi by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) leader Vandana Dongre for allegedly making “derogatory remarks” against freedom fighter VD Savarkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The complaint was lodged at the Thane city police station stating that Gandhi’s remarks had hurt the sentiments of local citizens. A case of non-cognizable (NCR) offence was registered under sections 500, 501 of the IPC.
2014 RSS-Mahatma Gandhi case: In a long list of his cases, Rahul Gandhi at a rally in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra in 2014 had allegedly said, “RSS people killed Gandhiji. They opposed Sardar Patel and Gandhiji.”
21st century Kauravas: A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker has filed a defamation complaint in a Haridwar court against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for calling the organisation “21st century Kauravas”.
Gauri Lankesh case: RSS worker and lawyer Dhritiman Joshi filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury in 2018 for allegedly trying to link the RSS with the death of journalist Gauri Lankesh. Joshi alleged in his complaint that Gandhi had said after Gauri’s murder, “Anyone who speaks against the ideology of the BJP, against the ideology of the RSS, is pressurised, beaten, attacked and even killed.”
Ranchi AICC case: BJP worker Naveen Jha filed a criminal defamation complaint before a CJM court in Ranchi in 2018 against Rahul for making alleged derogatory statements against the BJP at an internal meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Jharkhand-Modi surname case: His comments on the Modi surname led to multiple defamation cases against the leader. He is facing prosecution in a case filed by a man named Pradeep Modi, who filed a complaint against Gandhi for making derogatory statements during campaigning in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
National Herald case: Rahul Gandhi is out on bail in the National Herald case. Along with his mother Sonia Gandhi, he was granted bail in December 2015 in the case filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. The National Herald case involves the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd, the company that runs the National Herald newspaper, by Young Indian and the subsequent transactions.
