Will Nitish also follow the path of ‘dynasty’ and get his son into politics?

# News Bureau January 26,2025

Will Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar bring his 48-year-old only son Nishant Kumar into politics or will Nishant Kumar himself enter politics? This question is being asked continuously in political circles not only in Bihar but also outside Bihar for some time now. In Bihar, Makar Sankranti is often awaited for such works but some news suggests that Nishant Kumar may be brought into politics after Holi.

The most talked about statement of Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar was that he is interested in spirituality but recently he made a political statement in support of his father and heated up the discussion that he himself can also enter politics. Nishant appealed to the public to make JDU win in the assembly elections and also appealed to make his father Nitish Kumar the Chief Minister once again.

Not much information is available about Nishant Kumar, but it is said that he is an engineer like his father and has done a software course from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Nitish Kumar himself never answered the question whether his son wants to join politics or not. However, he has been constantly targeting RJD chief Lalu Prasad for ‘dynastic politics’.

It cannot be considered a mere coincidence that on one hand there are possibilities of Nitish Kumar stepping away from politics, while on the other hand there is talk of his son Nishant Kumar preparing to enter politics. It can also be said that Nitish has many lieutenants who are busy preparing to bring Nishant Kumar into politics.

JDU leader and senior minister of the state cabinet Shravan Kumar, who comes from Nitish Kumar’s home district Nalanda, is believed to play his role in bringing Nishant into politics. When Shravan Kumar was asked about Nishant, he said that if he wants to come into politics, he will welcome him. He described Nishant as a young man with good thinking and said that such people should actively play their role in politics. He expressed confidence that if Nishant comes into politics, the people of Bihar will accept him.

Janta Dal United is not saying anything officially on the discussion of Nishant Kumar coming into politics, but many of its leaders are showing enthusiasm. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party is completely silent in this matter. On the other hand, the opposition parties, especially RJD, are waiting that if Nishant Kumar comes into politics, then attacks should be started on Nitish Kumar on the pretext of nepotism.

In fact, the 2025 assembly elections are going to prove to be a decisive turning point for Nitish Kumar and Bihar. Nitish Kumar had announced in the 2020 assembly elections that he would no longer contest elections. However, such statements cannot be given much importance in politics because statements can be reversed. Despite this statement, Nitish Kumar could still be a contender for the post of Chief Minister in 2025, but the constant speculation about his health weakens his case.

Officially, both the Janata Dal United and the Bharatiya Janata Party have stated that the assembly elections in 2025 will be fought under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, but in between, the Bharatiya Janata Party also gives indications that it will think about the decision of the Chief Minister in 2025 later. Some BJP leaders also say that forming the Bharatiya Janata Party government is their priority.

Political commentators say that Nitish Kumar’s separation from electoral politics may lead to a leadership dispute in the JDU and while one faction would want to compensate for it by including Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant in the JDU, the other faction would want to take over the leadership of the JDU.

Nitish Kumar is currently the President of the Janata Dal United, but many people believe that he has been dominated by people who have very close ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party. There are many supporters of Nitish in the party who are against the faction that is close to the Bharatiya Janata Party. In such a situation, there can be internal tug of war in JDU on the issue of Nishant Kumar.

As far as the Bharatiya Janata Party is concerned, it would not want that after Nitish Kumar, any such person comes to JDU who prevents it from reaching the top of power. That is, it would not want to see any such face who can replace Nitish Kumar in JDU and is not close to it. In the list of possible people who can replace Nitish Kumar in JDU, most of them are considered close to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Many political observers believe that the Bharatiya Janata Party wants to immediately occupy the space that is left vacant after Nitish Kumar steps aside from politics. But outwardly, it does not want to separate itself from Nitish Kumar. The top leaders of the BJP are still realizing that Nitish Kumar’s face is important for it in Bihar. It wants to use Nitish Kumar’s face, but this time it is also its compulsion to make its party a contender for the post of Chief Minister. The BJP has already seen the bad result of contesting the elections alone in 2015 when it was reduced to only 53 seats.

What stance will the Bharatiya Janata Party take on Nishant Kumar’s entry into politics is an important question. It may welcome him by saying that such youth are needed in politics so that till the elections, the message does not go to the people that it is separating from Nitish Kumar or sidelining him. In such a situation, it may have to face criticism from the RJD and it will lose one more basis to attack Tejashwi Yadav.

This question is far-fetched but it is important to see whether Nishant Kumar will be able to get the same political attraction that Nitish Kumar has got? Rashtriya Janata Dal and Tejashwi Yadav will obviously consider Nishant Kumar to be less than Nitish Kumar and will look for better opportunities for themselves in this situation.
