At least 10 people were injured when unidentified terrorists hurled a grenade at the crowded ‘Sunday Bazaar’ in Srinagar. The attack took place near the heavily guarded Tourist Reception Centre (TRC). The attack came a day after security forces killed a top commander of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba in the city.

According to police sources, the grenade was hurled towards the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel near the TRC on Residency Road. The grenade missed the target and fell on a street vendor’s cart, injuring six people.

The injured were immediately rushed to a hospital and a joint team of J&K police and paramilitary forces cordoned off the area to nab those behind the attack. Srinagar’s Sunday bazaar is held on Residency Road between TRC and Lal Chowk.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and said there can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians.

“For the past few days, headlines have been full of attacks and encounters in parts of the Valley. Today’s news of grenade attack on innocent shopkeepers in Srinagar’s ‘Sunday Bazaar’ is extremely disturbing. There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must make every effort to stop this wave of attacks at the earliest so that people can live their lives without fear,” he said in a post.

This is the first grenade blast in Srinagar in more than a year. The incident took place a day after Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Usman Lashkari was killed in an encounter in Khanyar area of Srinagar. Police said that four security personnel were injured in the day-long encounter – including two each from Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF.

Let us tell you that two days ago, two common people were targeted and attacked in Budgam district. Both are residents of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. They have been admitted to JVC Hospital Bemina in Srinagar. Both the laborers worked as daily wage laborers in the Jal Shakti Department. They were injured by bullets, but their condition is said to be stable. Such attacks have been carried out continuously for the purpose of target killing in which terrorists decide who to kill. Such attacks have increased in the state in recent times and common people have been targeted.

Terrorists had targeted non-Kashmiris on October 24. They had then shot a labourer. He was seriously injured. Earlier, terrorists had opened fire at a construction site in Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district and killed a doctor and six migrant workers.

On October 18, terrorists had killed a migrant worker from Bihar in Shopian district. Locals found the bullet-riddled body of the worker in Waduna area of Zainapora in Shopian district of South Kashmir.
