There has been a big controversy over the laddus distributed as prasad in the Tirupati temple of Andhra Pradesh. There are allegations of fish oil and animal fat being used in the ghee used to make laddus. This has reportedly been confirmed in the report of a private lab. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has criticized his rival YSR Congress chief and former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy over this report.

Naidu’s son and Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh has also made a big attack on this. He said in a post on X, ‘Lord Venkateshwara Swamy Temple in Tirumala is our holiest temple. I was surprised to know that the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy administration used animal fat instead of ghee in Tirupati Prasadam.’

Citing a July 17 report of the Centre for Livestock and Food Analysis and Studies, or CALF, a laboratory of the Centre-run National Dairy Development Board in Gujarat and released on Wednesday, it said ghee used to make the famous Tirupati laddu when the YSRCP was in power had animal fat.

The report indicated that the ghee contained traces of fish oil, beef tallow and another fat. The latter is a near-solid white fat product made by melting the fatty tissue of pigs.

Following Chandrababu Naidu’s allegations, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh also targeted the Jagan Mohan Reddy government over the issue. Meanwhile, the YSRCP termed Naidu’s allegation as malicious and said that the TDP supremo can stoop to any level for political gains.

YSRCP leader and Rajya Sabha member Subba Reddy alleged that Naidu has seriously damaged the sanctity of the holy Tirumala and the faith of crores of Hindus with his comments. Subba Reddy said in a post on X, “His comments about Tirumala Prasadam are extremely malicious. No person would utter such words or make such allegations.”

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila demanded a CBI probe to find out if animal fat was indeed used to make the sweets. Sharmila said Naidu’s allegations have hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus who revere Lord Venkateswara as a revered deity. “Immediately form a high-level committee or get the CBI to investigate whether animal fat was used instead of ghee,” Sharmila said in a press release.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has termed it a serious issue and demanded punishment for those using animal fat in Tirupati laddus. BJP MLA T Raja Singh said, “It has come to light that beef fat and fish oil are being used in the holy Tirupati laddu prasadam under the YSRCP rule in Andhra Pradesh. This is a direct attack on our rich cultural and religious heritage, which should not be tolerated.”
