After that, Prime Minister Modi had said, ‘Instead of me coming to America, I would like a country where America has to stand in line to get a visa. We should work in this direction. And I am stuck with this stubbornness…’ Let us tell you that in 2012 itself, America had announced that it has not made any change in its visa policy regarding Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Accusing him of alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, America refused to give Modi a visa in March 2005.
Just two years later, in 2014, he became the Prime Minister and since then he has been in this position continuously. But did it happen that the whole of America is standing in line to get a visa to India? The answer to this question is told by the statistics of the Government of India. Responding to a question in Parliament last year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said in the Rajya Sabha that in 2022, 2,25,620 Indians had renounced the citizenship of the country.
Jaishankar had then said that the number of Indians who renounced their Indian citizenship in 2015 was 1,31,489, while 1,41,603 people gave up citizenship in 2016 and 1,33,049 people gave up citizenship in 2017. In 2018, this number was 1,34,561, while 1,44,017 gave up their citizenship in 2019 and 85,256 in 2020 and 1,63,370 in 2021.
That is, India did not prosper to the extent that American people would stand in queues for visas. Rather, the opposite happened. Now more Indian people started giving up citizenship.
The number of people who renounced their citizenship was 1,22,819 in 2011, while it was 1,20,923 in 2012, 1,31,405 in 2013 and 1,29,328 in 2014.
This was about renouncing Indian citizenship through legal means. Now the situation is such that Indians are entering America through illegal means and this is the reason why America is sending them back.
Earlier this week, the US sent back a plane full of illegal Indian immigrants to India, according to an announcement by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), TOI reported. DHS said that a large charter removal flight was sent to India on October 22, bringing back Indian nationals who did not have a legal basis to stay in the US.
However, DHS did not provide information about the number of immigrants or where in India they came from. A senior official said, ‘Indian nationals without a legal basis to stay in the United States can be deported immediately, and interested migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who claim otherwise. ‘ The official said that since June 2024, it has deported more than 160,000 individuals. For this, more than 495 international flights were sent to more than 145 countries, including India. The Indian government said in Parliament last year that according to data published by the US Customs and Border Protection on its website, the number of illegal Indian immigrants encountered by US authorities in 2023-2024 was 96,917.
