Nine people were injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra railway station on Sunday morning. The incident took place when people rushed to board the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express at 5.10 am. The Western Railway has said in a statement that ‘many passengers present on the platform attempted to board the moving train, resulting in two persons being injured, who fell while trying to board.’ According to reports, two are in critical condition, while seven other injured are being treated at Bhabha Hospital. Regarding this incident, Shiv Sena UBT has called Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav incompetent and said that rail accidents have increased during his tenure.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Aditya Thackeray said that it is shameful that ‘incompetent ministers’ are at the top in the country. He said, ‘I wish the reel minister was the Railway Minister once. The Bandra incident only shows how incompetent the current Railway Minister is. The BJP has made Ashwini Vaishnav ji in-charge of BJP Maharashtra for the elections, but every week some incidents and accidents keep
happening with the railways. It is such a shame that our country has to depend on such incompetent ministers.
The opposition uses the term ‘reel minister’ to target the Railway Minister over train accidents and derailments. Angered by this attack, the minister had said in Parliament in August, “We are not just reel makers, we are hard-working people.”
Less than a month is left for the assembly elections in Maharashtra and the BJP leadership has appointed former bureaucrat Vaishnav as in-charge of the party’s campaign.
On the other hand, regarding the stampede incident in Bandra, officials said that the stampede at Bandra Terminus happened due to the rush of passengers before Diwali. A railway spokesperson said that the railways runs special trains to deal with the rush of passengers during the festive season. The railway spokesperson said, ‘We request the passengers that proper arrangements have been made, RPF, GRP and ticket checking staff are present. Please board the train in an orderly manner and in a queue. Please do not board a moving train. Please follow the instructions of the railway staff so that you can reach your destination safely.’
This Gorakhpur-bound train has 22 coaches, all of which are unreserved. According to media reports, people had gathered on the platform since midnight to get seats. When the train arrived, around 1,500 people were on the platform and a stampede broke out. Some people even fell on the tracks.
