Bangladesh: Student leaders are deciding the interim government, Yunus will be the advisor, Khalida released

The committee of Bangladesh student movement leaders has announced the outline of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. According to the Dhaka Tribune, this information was given in a video message at 4:15 am on Tuesday by the main coordinators of the student movement Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud and Abu Bakar Majumdar.
After the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, President Mohammad Shahabuddin on Monday night approved the formation of an interim government to run the country. According to a press release by President’s Office Press Secretary Muhammad Shiplu Zaman, the decision was taken during a meeting at Bangabhaban after discussing the current situation with the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, leaders of various political parties and members of civil society.
The President has ordered the release of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jailed her arch rival in a corruption case in 2018. Apart from 78-year-old Khaleda Zia, the President ordered the release of all protesting prisoners.
The army has been tasked with stopping violence and restoring law and order. Army Chief General Wakar-uz-Zaman held a meeting with several political party leaders and members of civil society at the Army Headquarters. After the meeting, he told the media that the decision to form an interim government has been taken and it will be effective soon after discussions with the President.
After the meeting, the Army Chief said that justice will be done in all cases of murder and injustice. He called upon everyone to give up the path of violence and return home, saying, “Have faith in the Army.” The Army Chief also informed that he will soon meet the representatives of students and teachers. He expressed confidence that the situation will soon return to normal and all possible cooperation will be taken from people of all sections and professions including students, irrespective of party affiliation.
