A Class IV girl was allegedly raped and murdered while returning home from tuition in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas. Her body was found on the banks of the Ganga river in Krupakhali village on Saturday morning. Police said the girl went missing on Friday evening, following which a case was registered at midnight. After a preliminary investigation, the accused was arrested and the girl’s body was recovered from the river bank. Following the incident, people attacked a police outpost on Saturday, set it on fire and beat up policemen.
Baruipur Superintendent of Police Palash Dhali said they received information about the girl’s disappearance at 9 pm. According to media reports, investigations began immediately, leading to the identification of a suspect. An FIR was filed by midnight, resulting in the arrest of the accused and subsequent recovery of the body. He said the police have taken all necessary steps and any complaint from the public will be addressed.
Meanwhile, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Sukanta Majumdar expressed grief over the tragic incident and criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government on Thursday for the deteriorating law and order situation.
He also shared footage of large protests by local residents. The BJP leader wrote, “A Class IV student was raped and murdered while returning from tuition in Krupakhali area of Kultali police station. Villagers later found her body on the river bank. My question to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has failed to protect women, is will Bengal girls not get any relief even at the beginning of Devi Paksha? How many more Bengali girls will have to suffer this plight under your misrule?”
The incident comes at a time when Bengal and the entire country are still grappling with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Doctors have been protesting, demanding justice and stricter safety laws.
