People angry over female doctor rape-murder case
The incident of rape-murder case of a 31-year-old doctor in a government hospital in Kolkata has shaken the entire state. After which doctors across the country also went on strike. However, the accused in this case, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested. The Calcutta High Court ordered that the investigation of the case be handed over to the CBI. The court said that there has been a serious lapse on the part of the hospital administration and expressed the possibility that evidence may be destroyed. The court said, “Even after 5 days have passed, no conclusion has been reached, which should have been reached by now. Therefore, we agree that there is every possibility of evidence being destroyed. We deem it appropriate that the case should be handed over to the CBI immediately.”

The rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata has now taken a political turn. The Bengal governor reached RG Medical College on Thursday afternoon to meet the agitating doctors. A large group of unidentified men stormed Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 12.40 am on Wednesday and destroyed hospital property amid an ongoing agitation by junior doctors against the August 9 rape and murder. The incident took place when women were staging a midnight protest called ‘Reclaim the Night’ against the horrific rape-murder of a doctor at the hospital. The Kolkata police said that 40 people allegedly disguised as protesters entered the hospital premises, vandalised property and cars and pelted stones at the police. Protests are being held in the city on Thursday, August 15, against the incident.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the vandalism was carried out by “TMC goons” sent by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The protest was a response to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor while on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the 31-year-old woman doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel blamed the media for the mob attack on August 15 and alleged that what happened was the result of a ‘false and malicious media campaign’. He said rumours of the main accused having political connections were spread by the media, which led to anger. He said the police cannot arrest anyone based on rumours and asked for patience. The commissioner said, “We have not done anything wrong… People have lost faith in the Kolkata Police because of this malicious media campaign.”

Following the night’s violence, the BJP has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her police minister to resign from their posts. “A police force that cannot protect its citizens or a crime scene is disgraceful. The police minister and the CM must step down immediately. Their incompetence is putting lives at risk,” the party said.
