The swearing-in ceremony was held at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar conducted the swearing-in ceremony. At the ceremony, JMM leader Hemant Soren took oath as the 14th chief minister of Jharkhand after winning the state assembly elections earlier this month. The India Bloc, led by leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, attended the ceremony as a display of unity.
Opposition leaders like Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal were present at the event held in Ranchi. In the recently concluded elections for the 81-member assembly, the JMM-led alliance won 56 seats. The BJP-led NDA got 24 seats.
After his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this year in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam, Hemant Soren made a spectacular comeback for the India Bloc in the recently held assembly elections. Defying exit poll predictions, Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, in alliance with the Congress, RJD and CPI-ML, secured 56 of the 81 assembly seats.
Hemant Soren retained the Barhet seat in the recently held assembly elections and defeated BJP’s Gamlil Hembrom by a margin of 39791 votes. The BJP had run its election campaign on the twin issues of ‘infiltration’ and ‘Mati, Beti, Roti’.
After taking oath as the 14th chief minister of the state, Hemant Soren will decide on who among the India Block allies will get which portfolios in his new government. Cabinet berths are likely to be allotted on the basis of the formula of one post for every four MLAs, ensuring proportional representation for each ally.
According to constitutional guidelines, the total number of ministerial posts in Jharkhand cannot exceed 12. With this arrangement, Congress is likely to get 4 posts, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) 1 and Left parties with two MLAs each are likely to get one post.
