Atishi’s choice is better than Sunita’s, but it is a crown of thorns

By choosing Atishi Marlena, sidelining his wife and AAP leader Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal has hit many targets with one arrow. If he had chosen Sunita Kejriwal, she would have been accused of promoting nepotism and ending democracy in the party, just like Lalu Yadav, without any experience.

How is Atishi better?

Many other senior leaders of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could have been eligible for the post of Chief Minister, but due to various allegations against them and some other reasons, they may not have been selected for this post.

  1. Deputy Chief Minister and Education and Finance Minister Manish Sisodia: Manish, the second-in-command in the party, is also an accused in the Delhi liquor policy scam and has also been arrested.
  2. Health Minister Satyendra Jain: Jain, known for the success of Mohalla Clinics in Delhi, is also accused of money laundering and was also arrested.
  3. Transport and Environment Minister Gopal Rai: Gopal Rai is an experienced and influential leader, but has limited support base and has not played a major role in any major administrative reform or scheme.
  4. Kailash Gehlot: Gehlot is also accused of some controversial land deals.
  5. Sunita Kejriwal: Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal was also named among the potential candidates, but her administrative experience is limited and she has no direct role in politics.

Atishi has a clean image, . Her selection is an apt answer to the opposition’s allegations along with giving the party an opportunity to provide clean and progressive leadership.

A crown of challenges and thorns

However, as the Chief Minister of Delhi, Atishi has not got the comfortable throne of power but a crown of challenges and thorns.

The biggest challenge will be good governance, which is related to the ground level problems of the common man of Delhi – whether it is water shortage, pollution issue, or continuous efforts to improve health and education. Apart from this, coordinating with the Lieutenant Governor, who often causes conflict between the Delhi government and the central government, will also be a major challenge for Atishi.
