Crack in India alliance over EVM? Know what is TMC’s stand now

#News Bureau November 16,2024

Is there going to be a fight within the India Alliance on the issue of EVM? By the way, the rhetoric has already started. First Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised questions on the complaints of EVM tampering and now TMC has also agreed with him. That is, two major parties of the India Alliance are not in favor of raising questions on EVM.

Actually, there is a dispute in the India Alliance on whether to raise questions on EVM i.e. Electronic Voting Machine or not. Trinamool Congress has also rejected the claims of Congress on the credibility of EVM voting system along with Omar Abdullah. TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee took a dig at Congress and said that those raising questions on EVM should show how EVM can be hacked.

Abhishek, nephew of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said, ‘I believe that those questioning EVMs should go to the Election Commission and show it if they have any proof. If proper investigation is done during EVM randomization, mock poll and counting, then I do not think these allegations have any merit. If someone still believes that EVMs can be hacked, then they should demonstrate it in front of the Election Commission.’

The Trinamool has attacked the Congress at a time when the relationship between the two allies of the India Alliance is already strained on many issues. Trinamool has stayed away from the Congress-led protest in Parliament over the Gautam Adani bribery case. A rift was already visible in the opposition camp after Mamata Banerjee showed interest in leading the India Alliance.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement on EVMs came on Sunday. After he accused the Congress of complaining about EVMs on selective occasions, the Congress has now asked why Omar has this attitude only after becoming the CM?

Omar Abdullah had said in an interview on Sunday that when you elect more than 100 MPs using the same EVM, you celebrate your party’s victory, but if the results are not the same after a few months, then the attitude towards EVM changes.

In fact, through this tweet, he has indicated a change in the attitude of Omar Abdullah and his party National Conference. So the question is, has there really been a change in the attitude of Omar Abdullah? Is this an attempt to please the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir appointed by the Center so that the government can get some support? These are the questions that emerge from the statement of Manikam Tagore.

Let us tell you that after the significant electoral defeats in Haryana and Maharashtra, the Congress and other opposition parties have expressed concern over the reliability of EVMs and advocated the return of ballot paper voting. Abdullah, in an interview with PTI on Sunday, rejected the objection of the Congress and said that voting machines cannot be a problem only when you lose the election. Abdullah said, ‘When more than 100 of your MPs use the same EVM, and you celebrate it as a victory for your party, then you cannot turn around after a few months and say that … we do not like these EVMs because now the election results are not coming the way we want.’
