Cyclone Dana is expected to hit Odisha on Thursday night. Before this, officials are engaged in evacuating about 10 lakh people from several coastal districts. Officials are short of time to evacuate such a large number of people. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Cyclone Dana has turned into a severe cyclonic storm. Its wind speed is likely to reach 120 km per hour. About half the population of the state may be affected.

The IMD said that as of 5.30 am today, the cyclone was 290 km south-southeast of Dhamra in Odisha and 350 km south of Sagar Island in West Bengal. The cyclone is likely to hit between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port in Odisha.

Kolkata airport will suspend flight operations from 6 pm on Thursday to 9 am on Friday, while Bhubaneswar airport will suspend its operations from 5 pm today to 9 am on Friday. Around 200 trains passing through the two neighbouring states have been cancelled in view of the cyclone.

According to a report, around 4 lakh people have been moved to cyclone shelters as the cyclone is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika and Dhamra. After reviewing the situation, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told media persons, “The state government is fully prepared to deal with any situation. I urge people not to panic. You are in safe hands. We are closely monitoring the situation with the help of several systems.”

Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said, “The state has identified more than 3000 vulnerable places in 14 districts, mainly in the coastal region, and has started the process of evacuating people. 10,60,336 people are likely to be evacuated before the arrival of Cyclone Dana.”

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall. The IMD has predicted that many other coastal and interior districts are also likely to receive rain on Thursday and Friday.

With senior IAS officers monitoring the situation, the Odisha government has assigned nine districts to nine ministers to oversee relief and rescue activities at the ground level.
