Has the Amit Shah-Ambedkar issue put the BJP in serious trouble? Why did Amit Shah and JP Nadda hold a meeting with leaders of NDA alliance partners amid opposition attacks led by the Congress? Is it afraid of political loss?
The top leadership of the BJP held a meeting with NDA alliance leaders on Wednesday and discussed the need for the NDA to present a united front to counter the opposition’s attack. Shah and BJP president JP Nadda met with NDA leaders for an hour. The Indian Express reported, quoting sources, that the main topic was the opposition’s attack against the BJP over Amit Shah’s comments, caste census and the politics of social justice.
Before knowing what happened in this NDA meeting, let us know how the opposition is attacking Amit Shah’s comment on Ambedkar and what kind of loss it is likely to suffer.
Congress has created a ruckus over the statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in which he said in the Rajya Sabha – ‘Now it has become a fashion – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If you take this many names of God, you will get heaven for seven lives.’ Home Minister Amit Shah has got into a bad situation by making a statement on Ambedkar. Congress first demanded an apology, then demanded his resignation and demanded his dismissal. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faith in the Dalit leader, then he should be dismissed from the Union Cabinet.
Amit Shah is giving clarifications regarding his comment on Dr. BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha. He said in his clarification that he comes from a party that will never insult Ambedkar’s legacy. He accused the Congress of twisting his statement. How much the issue and the opposition’s attacks have hurt the BJP is evident from the fact that Amit Shah held a press conference along with four other Union ministers – JP Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnav. He appealed to the media to report his full remarks in the press conference.
Meanwhile, Rahul had said, ‘The thinking of BJP-RSS is anti-Constitution and anti-Ambedkar. They want to destroy his legacy. Their minister showed his mentality in front of everyone. We said that an apology should be made.’
Amidst the attacks of the opposition parties, almost all the non-BJP parties including BSP, which till now sat in the lap of BJP, are suddenly making the insult of Baba Saheb an issue and its effect is visible on the ground as well. Not only BSP, even the non-BJP parties included in NDA are not supporting it on this issue, in fact leaders like Chirag Paswan and Ramdas Athawale are second to none in showing their displeasure.
Even the parties which have so far stayed away from NDA and India are not delaying in clarifying their position on this issue.
Amid such heavy pressure, Amit Shah and JP Nadda have held a meeting with NDA leaders. According to the report of The Indian Express, it is said that Amit Shah told the leaders that Congress is trying to fabricate a false story. The message was clear that NDA will have to unite and counter the narrative of the opposition.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was also present in that meeting. According to the English newspaper report, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde were absent from the meeting held at Nadda’s residence. However, JD(U) was represented by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan alias Lallan Singh and Shiv Sena was represented by Union Minister of State Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav. Union Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, Civil Aviation Minister, TDP leader K Rammohan Naidu and Union Ministers Anupriya Patel, Jitan Ram Manjhi and Sanjay Nishad were also present in the meeting.
The newspaper reported quoting sources that Amit Shah spoke in detail about recent political developments, including the events that took place during the winter session of Parliament and the lessons learned from it. He told the leaders that the Congress never respected Ambedkar, but now it is trying to build a narrative in its favor, which should be countered strongly and unitedly.
